Ohio got some great news – recent job numbers show that in May, Ohio was #1 the nation in job creation. Read more here from the Enquirer:
Ohio topped the nation last month when it added 32,100 jobs, far more than any other state and the most here in a single month in at least a decade.
Kentucky and Indiana saw smaller gains from April to May.
The latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is an about-face for Ohio after a rough couple months. The state gained a disappointing 6,000 jobs in April and lost almost 22,000 in March – the most in a month since the Great Recession.
Over the past two years, however, Ohio has recovered faster from the recession than much of the rest of the nation and maintains an unemployment rate around 7 percent, better than the national rate of 7.6 percent.
The May report shows hiring by manufacturers is leveling off, but other sectors of the economy are picking up the slack.
“You wouldn’t want to put much faith in just one month,” said Jim Brock, a Miami University economist. “But it’s in line with a recovering economy. It’s nothing to sneeze at.”
And
Gov. John Kasich’s office credited the increase in job creation to the governor’s tax and business policies. “Today’s jobs report is another clear indicator of Ohio’s strong momentum,” said Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols.
And
Overall, 33 states saw job growth last month, with Ohio outpacing Texas for the top spot. Texas gained 19,500 jobs and Michigan, which was third on the list, added 18,100.
Ohio now has more than 5.2 million non-farm payroll jobs. Indiana has 2.9 million and Kentucky 1.8 million.
